The Six Best Drives in Scotland
Scotland is well known for its stunning scenery and beautiful landscapes. For a relatively small country, it boasts some of the best scenic routes in the world. Here, we list some of the best Scotland drives.
1 Fort William to Mallaig
The popular mode of travel to between Fort William and Mallaig is actually the train, but we think a car journey boasts far more opportunities for adventure. The train goes over Glenfinnan viaduct, seen in the Harry Potter films, and is voted as one of the most scenic rail trips in the world. In the car, make stops at the Glenfinnan monument. This statue is a memorial to the final Jacobite uprising in 1745.
2 Balloch and the Trossachs
Throughout this journey, you’ll have full view of the famous Loch Lomond. Enjoy sights of the Arrochar Alps along the way, eventually leading to Loch Katrine. This idyllic lake is a stunning sight.
3 Ullapool to Durness
This route is a lot quieter than others, revealing some of the most secret spots in Scotland. See Scotland at its wildest and be far from man-made structures. Savour the mountains and lochs in their purity and enjoy the experience. Keen hikers will enjoy an adventure up the Assynt hills. Take a walk out to Sandwood Bay for one of the prettiest (and quietest) beaches in the UK.
4 Stirling to Skye
The A82 is the most popular route to Skye from southern Scotland, and probably the best route if you are starting near Glasgow. Coming from Edinburgh, the best route is from Stirling. You can easily make a day out of this 3-hour trip, with some incredible stops along the way. Pass one of Scotland’s most well-known mountains at the foot of Glencoe, Buachaille Etive Mor and take a stroll through Glencoe’s valleys.
5 The Isle of Arran
A 55-mile circuit around Scotland’s seventh biggest island, Arran is a popular route for cyclists and drivers. Grab a quick ferry over in the morning, spend the day and then hop on the ferry back. Visit the 4000-year-old Machrie Moor stone circle in the west to dig up some of Arran’s history, along with the Glendashdale waterfall with a 140-foot drop! Do all this around the circuit of the road.
6 Perthshire to Royal Deeside
Home to Cairngorm National Park, the twisty climb up the pass of Glenshee gives you an adrenalin rush. There are many stop-off destinations along this route, like the royal heritage in Balmoral Castle and Craiever Castle too. Have a perfect picnic along the bank of the River Dee and enjoy the attractive sites all the way through Deeside.
