Top Tips For Buying a Used Car

Second hand doesn’t have to mean second rate and there are plenty of high quality used cars available on the market. Buying a used car is a great option for anyone on a budget, but you want to be sure that you’re getting a good deal. Some customers can be wary of buying a used car, as you don’t want to purchase a vehicle and find out it has a host of hidden problems.

It is possible to get a great deal on a used car if you do a little background research and come prepared, so read on for our top tips for buying a car second hand.

Choose a trustworthy dealer

If you’re buying a car from a trader (rather than at auction or from an individual), always look for an established firm with a good reputation and reviews. Most reliable firms will have a trade association sign, like the Retail Motor Industry Federation or a sign that says they follow The Motor Ombudsman's code of practice. This is a great safety net, as it means you can take action through a trade association if there are any issues.

Check the car’s history

A simple background check can save you a lot of hassle in the long run and avoid potential costly repairs. You’ll also be able to find out whether the previous owner still owes money on the car, or if it’s being sold illegally. You can check a vehicle’s details with the DVLA and you’ll need to ask the seller for the car’s registration number, MOT test number, mileage, and make and model.

If some minor details don’t match there may be an innocent explanation, but if major details don’t line up, it’s best to steer clear.

Inspect the vehicle

Always inspect any used car thoroughly (as well as taking it for a test drive) before putting in an offer. It’s best to arrange to view the car on a clear, dry day with plenty of natural light. Ask about the car’s service history and give the interior and exterior a visual inspection. Check for leaks, scratches, dents, rust and other general wear and tear, like upholstery damage.

It’s also worth carefully examining the paintwork; if a colour doesn’t match or you notice overspray, this suggests that a part has been repaired and repainted.
